Kickin' It. Joblessness, It's A Thing.
Settling into week 2 of Unemployment "Woo!", Electric Boogaloo.
Running out of things to do already. My life has always been very simple, even in the busiest of times. I have no significant other, no kids, no friends, no real hobbies, no real interests that don't involve sitting in front of a computer screen, so taking 40 hours of activity away from an already light schedule is a challenge. Not complaining, this is what I wanted and needed, but it's already getting boring.
I wanted to join a gym, but the only one around here would be $60/month and I don't really want to add any extra expenses right now, for obvious reasons. I have been walking a bit, trying to do a couple miles at least 3 times a week and hopefully more if the knee holds up. Ideally I'd love to get back into tennis again but then there's the aforementioned knee and the expense of rackets and shoes and balls and such. Don't see it happening. Golf, all the same things, and even more initial outlay.
So most of my days thus far have been doing whatever small amount of errands early in the day then sitting around trying to find something decent to watch on Netflix, which is a fucking chore in it's own right. I also have spent a few extra nights working on the Vegas playlist - it's nearly 2 months from going and it's basically done.
The good news is I don't have to rush anything, job-wise. The 401k cash out is more than I thought it would be by a significant margin, so basically, when combined with what's already in the bank and the Macy's money, I could have something north of a half-year's pay in my account within a couple weeks. And that's in addition to the impending $1800/month in UI I'm about to start collecting, and another hopefully $2K in tax refunds in Feb. So I'm good to loaf for a bit.
So the plan in the short term (til after the holidays) is take it easy, rest my head/body, try to lose some weight and stress, have a great Vegas trip in late December and then hit the job market hard in January to hopefully find the job that will get me to retirement. The good thing, again, is I don't have to rush it and can try to wait for the right, truly best situation and opportunity to come along. Not really worried, I've always been able to find a job when the need arises.
What I CAN'T do right now is any planning for the 50th birthday "was supposed to be April Vegas blowout but now I can't plan it because I don't have a job" trip. Which is a bummer. But hopefully by then, since I'll be close to losing my UI benefits at that point, I'll have some gainful employment lined up and can make that trip a condition of employment.
So for now, probably not much to report here. I'll likely check in (since this IS a Vegas blog) when I'm getting closer to the December trip or if something amazing happens on the personal front.
Or if I find something to watch on Netflix.
