SLS Vegas Is Trying Too Hard.

Think this post from the often annoying but usually correct vegastripping.com seems to say it all.

The place looks like an unfinished warehouse. I can't for the life of me understand why a place that's trying to be posh/hip wouldn't spring for fucking ceiling tiles. Floor-20 ft looks colorful and retro-modern, fitting the "boutique" feel they're going for, but then above that it becomes fucking Blade Runner, and not in a good way. I'm no architect, but apparently the designer of this place isn't either.

Sure, you will draw in crowds in the first few months b/c "ooh, shiny new thing!", but after that you have to have some hook to get people to come back. The Cosmo truly IS hip/posh/retro chic, it has been since opening, it doesn't have to put on airs. It's a destination because it's beautiful and decadent and is full of beautiful and decadent people and things. Wynn/Encore has luxury. Bellagio has the fountains and a perfect location. The new Cromwell has Drai's, an established nightclub brand. Caesars is Caesars and so on.

This place has...Foxtail? OK. Most people aren't club people, and most younglings who ARE club people are going to go to Hakkasan or Light or Marquee, places that have a rep for being off the hook for that kind of crowd. The writer of this story said a telling thing on the last page; by 2a when shit's just getting STARTED on a Friday night they were jetting off back to the center strip.

I haven't seen the place in person yet, and I'll reserve final judgement until I go there in December, but this looks like another "boutique" joint (such an overused word now on the strip) that will need to somehow find a reason to get people to go to it. It's location might as well be Siberia for most people who walk the strip, Its looks to be too high end for the Circus/Riviera/Strat crowd and too low end for the Wynn/Encore crowd, and it doesn't look to have the distinctiveness or room quality to be a destination. Frankly the rooms look cheap and dated already, and they're TINY.

If I want to go to the Cosmo, there's a better looking one on the center strip...called the fucking Cosmo.
