Well, That Sucks.

March Vegas trip is a goner.

The situation both in the world (and in my world) and in Vegas is deteriorating rapidly. My research site has been shut down at least until the end of March, and who knows how long in reality. Luckily my company came through and I will be able to work from home and get full paychecks for those two weeks, but who knows what'll happen if it goes on longer, which seems likely at this point.

The Vegas situation is also worsening rapidly. The excellent Vital Vegas Twitter account is posting sad news almost hourly about restaurant and bar closures, and even a lot of the housekeeping staffs are being laid off. The Mandalay Bay/Delano complex where I was going to be staying apparently is shutting down essentially all restaurants. The flight hasn't been cancelled yet but it seems also like just a matter of time, even if I did want to be on a flying germ tube.

So, even if I did go in a week and a half (when things are likely to be worse, not better), and even if the resorts were somehow still operating I was going to end up being in a ghost town, drinking in my room, most likely eating room service and, what, just shuffling around playing slots all day with no other entertainment? In Vegas? No thanks. So I've cancelled the room and I'm in the process of cancelling the flight, through Twitter, because Allegiant's phone lines are literally busy tones with everyone else doing the same thing.

In all honesty it's prudent right now anyway to keep what little savings I have in reserve, rather than blowing it on a compromised trip that will likely be a downer. Who knows what the next few weeks will bring. Hopefully people come to their senses or the virus abates, but right now it seems just as likely society is going to collapse. It's no joke.

I'm bummed. I don't think I've ever cancelled a trip once it was officially on the books, especially when I was under two weeks and I could taste it. Now it'll just be a waiting game. I'll hold off for a couple weeks before re-booking, maybe I can get a late April trip on the books if this thing lightens up. Maybe I was destined to take the birthday trip after all this year, if all goes well.

Fuck, though.
