Vegas. Bitch.

Previous to this trip I have stayed at some of the most bargain-basement "resorts" on the strip. Here are some condensed post-mortems based on really just my impressions of the resorts, cuz my memories of the actual trips are pretty fuzzy.

-Rumor, a boutique place about a mile east of the strip. This was my first trip to Vegas. It was really cool/funky, bit youngish of a vibe for me and I learned later that it caters to the LGBT community (whatever). The room was beautiful but you could tell the resort itself was a converted Rodeway Inn or something. Has a little apartment complex pool and no real lounge or restaurants to speak of. Check in desk is about 10 feet wide and right behind it is a 15 foot long bar with a little outside deck where people were clustered looking uncomfortable and listening to a sad little DJ. I came back to the bar on my way to the room at about 3a the first night I was there and the bartender and I were literally the only people there. Anywhere. All in all kind of a flashy nothing. Also is about a mile away from the strip across from Hard Rock Hotel. No real amenities. I found a porn online that was shot in one of the rooms, though. I wasn't in it, sadly.

-Stratosphere. This place is sold as being on "The Strip", but don't believe it. This motherfucker is literal miles away from ANYTHING, it's in a dead zone of about a mile north from the real Strip and a couple miles south of downtown. I stayed here on my second trip b/c it was a cheap plane/resort package. It's really not worth it unless you like taking a cab to/from anywhere or you don't mind walking miles, and miles to get around. I had a view facing away from the strip into the wasteland that is Las Vegas outside of the Strip, and remember literally nothing about the room or the hotel. I won nothing on slots here. Really can't recommend it, if you want to go that cheap there are better located places to stay.

-Riviera. Another booking based on price, this is a pretty run down joint that trades on being one of the few OG casinos still standing. The Rat-Packy vibe wears off quickly when you are made to wait in an hour-long check in line, see the non-ironic '70's era decor everywhere and get up to a room that literally could have been out of a Motel 6. Sure, Sinatra may have once puked on THIS VERY CARPET, but it still looks and smells as if he did it yesterday. That said, I did have fun staying here, they have a good English style pub that I hung out at and there's sort of an outlaw vibe to the place. Couldn't recommend booking a room there again though.

-Luxor. This was a step up from the previous two resorts but in all honesty the place is showing its age, and not gracefully. This place is a poster child for the last 10 years of Vegas "generic-izing" itself. It originally was an over the top Egyptian theme but now it's been watered down to the sort of generic luxury you find at all the low-mid level resorts. Problem is, you can't exactly hide the fact that your room is INSIDE A FUCKING PYRAMID, or that there's a goddamned Sphinx acting as the front door to the place. The interior is weird in that from your room looking into the pyramid you're looking down on the unfinished backsides of all the attractions in the atrium, so you really get graphic reminders that you're in an artifice, and that takes you out of any illusion you may have of being in an exotic locale. It all seems kind of half-assed and thrown together. Room was OK, service was OK. The location is good as it's surrounded by many of the other "signature" MGM places like Mandalay Bay, NYNY, and MGM Grand. Overall about a 6/10.

I will make every effort to stay at a different resort every time so that all the thousands (1) of you will get a resort review that's fresh every time. Funky fresh, if you will.
